Dear family and friends, dear colleagues of LiDO,
dear Madam and Sir,
Life consists of a multitude of events, decisions and encounters. It is often only in retrospect that we understand how the individual threads that cross our paths in life come together to form a meaningful whole. In a certain sense, it can be compared to a carpet: only through the interweaving of individual threads does a large-scale overall work emerge.
This is also the case with Otobong Nkanga's latest "oeuvre": four tapestries that the Nigerian-Belgian artist created from tens of thousands of individual threads on a rapier weaving machine of Lindauer DORNIER and joined together into a complete work of art.
These tapestries were woven at the TextielMuseum (TextielLab) in Tilburg (NL) and can be admired for the first time at Kunsthaus Bregenz as of October.
I would like to cordially invite you to visit this exhibition on 23 October 2021. A joint tour with the artist is planned, who will talk about her latest work and the history of its creation.
Afterwards I would be pleased, also on the occasion of my belated 60th birthday celebration, to welcome you to a boat trip on Lake Constance.
Understanding, says artist Nkanga, means drawing lines of connection. In this sense, I am already looking forward to a pleasant evening together and the opportunity to celebrate existing connections and “weaving” new ones in a cheerful atmosphere accompanied by music, food and drinks.
